Physical Education lesson plans

Volleyball- 4 square Objectives: To have students practice the skill of underhand volleying. To practice contacting a ball with flat body surfaces such as palm, fist or forearm. TEKS

Developmental Level: 3-5

Play Area: 4 square courts

Number of participants:  minimum of four

Materials needed:  tape, four large cones for each court, soft-ball for each court

Safety considerations:  Possibility for the ball to go flying and hit someone. Make sure students are aware of their surroundings.

Activities and procedures:  This activity can be performed with a similar rotation to a 4-square game, or it can be simplified with no rotation. One person stands on each outside boundary of the 4-square court. They can choose to be as close or as far away from the line as they choose. With the 4-square rotation idea, designate each side by a number so that students who make miscues can rotate to side number 4. There are cones located in each corner. Similar to soccer goalies, the student between each 2 cones is protecting their "goal line" (the outside boundary line of the court). Each court has 4 goals (and 4 players). Once the ball is in play, the object is to keep it from bouncing on the ground beyond your "goal line". Any player allowing the ball to cross their goal line and bounce rotates to side number 4. Servers announce "Ready" before a serve is made, and they must start by serving to the person directly across from them. After the serve is made, players can strike the ball in ANY direction they desire. To serve the ball, the server must bounce the ball and contact with the palm of their hand or the flat side of the fist as in handball. Players must rotate to side 4 if they catch the ball or if their shot bounces two times in the 4-square box before crossing a goal line. On any balls close to the line or on the line where the call is unclear, have the students replay the ball.  Variations
  1. regular four square
  2. instead of rotating, keeping score
  3. if not enough room for everyone to play four square at once, those standing on the side could do passing drills
  4. If using the 4-square rotation system, a point is awarded to the server for each time you serve and are able to stay in your serving position (side one). Highest score wins.
  5. Choosing certain ways for them to hit the ball (bumping, setting).
 Cues
  1. have the students break into four teams
  2. ask them if they have played the game of four square
  3. go over the game of four-square
  4. explain the game

Activities and procedures: (1)

1)Have students stand in four separate groups across a designated line.

2) Huge trashcan in the middle of court that is filled with various sized balls is pushed over

3) have first group “roundup” the “tumbleweeds” and throw them into the trashcan

 Variations

1)      Have scooter races

2)      Have students throw balls into their designated team bucket to see who can collect the most.

3)      Have students throw balls into “goals” from various distances.

(two-three yards away from the dog) The next person steps/leaps over the turtle, crawls under the dog (low) and makes her-/himself into an elephant (high).

4. (two-three yards from the elephant) The next person steps/leaps over the turtle, crawls under the dog, runs around the elephant (medium), and makes a turtle.

5. Then the first person gets up from the turtle position, goes through all the obstacles and makes the next thing in the sequence (dog).
Safety Considerations Students could possibly trip or run into each other. Make sure the students are aware of where other students are and that they do not rush.  Variations1.     students can have a relay race, competing with different groups.2.     Change the types of animals 3.     have the students make the animal noises while moving Sources:

Play Area full court

Number of participants three groups of five

Materials three hula-hoops; twenty bean bags      Activities/ Procedures  Set Up: (1)  Prior to the activity, set up a large area (depending on the number of students) with boundaries marked by cones. Scatter the bean bags throughout the designated area. Place one hula hoop on the outside of each edge of the boundaries.Divide the students into three  and place each group at one of the three hula hoops. Explain to the students that the area inside the cones is the "ocean" and the bean bags are "crab food." Explain that the hula hoop is their team hula hoop and is where they are going to place the bean bags that they collect. The students are going to crab walk inside the boundaries and collect the bean bags. They are only allowed to get one bean bag at a time. Once they get a bean bag, they place it on their stomach and crab walk to their team’s hula hoop. They place the bean bag in the hula hoop and go back to get another bean bag. Each team is trying to collect the most bean bags either before time runs out or all the bean bags are gone.Variations1.     Give each student in the group a number. Call each other and have them collect as many bean bags as possible (still in the crab position) and move them to the hula-hoops.2.     Give each student in each group a number and put one beanbag in the center. Play steal the bacon. 3.     Have the students practice throwing and catching the bean bags.  Safety Considerations

Students could possibly run into each other. Make sure they pay attention to their surroundings.
